Spuffy Poll Tiems

While I have been reading LJ, I haven't been participating much in terms of commenting because of graduate school slash real life. But it seems to me, in my very narrow flist reading, that there has been some debate the past few weeks over Spuffy.

As in do people who ship Spuffy side with Spike more or Buffy more? Do they hate Buffy? Do they hate Spike? Do they woobify Spike too much? I could go on and on. I love seeing these kind of debates, that we are still talking in this fandom about these things.

It really got me to thinking about Spuffy lately as I drive the 90 minutes to and 90 minutes back from campus. This is the poll I came up with, the one that I think really needs to be asked of the Spuffy fandom (and of those who think about Spuffy as a ship, positive or negative)

[Poll #1836081]

For those too young to remember

Feel free to expand on your answers in comments.

You are very silly. I like that in a gal.

My brain is so fried from school so this is about as brainy as I can get in fandom debates and discussion. :)

[identity profile] menomegirl.livejournal.com 2012-04-25 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
Since we didn't get a third option, I'm going with:

Canon: Less filling!
Fanfiction: Tastes great!

:)

[identity profile] xlivvielockex.livejournal.com 2012-04-25 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
See, if only Miller Lite had canon and fanon. THINK OF THE AD CAMPAIGN!

[identity profile] menomegirl.livejournal.com 2012-04-25 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
LOL! It would be awesome!

[identity profile] josiefier.livejournal.com 2012-04-25 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
I liked them. Can't remember all the reasons why now, of course.

But debaters gonna debate. I'm just glad Ganya's my forever Buffy OTP, way fewer fights.

[identity profile] xlivvielockex.livejournal.com 2012-04-25 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
It's cause they taste great. No they are less filling! Great taste! Less filling! We could go on for days!

[identity profile] josiefier.livejournal.com 2012-04-25 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
True! True! LOL!

[identity profile] menomegirl.livejournal.com 2012-04-25 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Pardon my intrusion but Ganya? Giles/Anya?

[identity profile] xlivvielockex.livejournal.com 2012-04-25 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing to be ashamed of. They are huge on Tumblr. Like seriously, super popular.

I would have loved to see some Giles and Anya in canon. HAWTNESS.

OH WELL THEY HAVE THE AFTERLIFE TO BE HAPPY AND CANON LALALALALALA!

[identity profile] menomegirl.livejournal.com 2012-04-25 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
Well, there was that one kiss in Tabula Rasa, which is more than some ships got.

[identity profile] xlivvielockex.livejournal.com 2012-04-25 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
It is something to gif and make icons of without manips, which is always a boon for shippers for sure.

It's more than say my lovely Buffy/Clem got for sure!

[identity profile] josiefier.livejournal.com 2012-04-25 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously? How come I can never find those bits of awesomeness over there? Dammit. I know what I'm doing tomorrow!

I will at least be forever grateful for the kiss in Tabula Rasa and the hair/hand touch in Grave. That's still more than most of my ships get lol.

YES! EXACTLY!! THAT IS EXACTLY MY THOUGHT!! I was convinced I was the only one not upset about that bit in the comics for that very reason! Usually I'll ignore comic canon, but that's one rare case where it actually made me happy.

[identity profile] xlivvielockex.livejournal.com 2012-04-25 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
This one hasn't been updated in a while but there is a lot of good stuff there.

I agree with the "I'm disappointed there was no random sex scene here" macro! But thankies for the link!!

[identity profile] menomegirl.livejournal.com 2012-04-25 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
I like G/A. :) I was just asking because I'd never seen those names smooshed together in that way before. *g*

[identity profile] josiefier.livejournal.com 2012-04-25 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
YAY! Aw lol, somehow that's pretty much how I've always seen their names since entering that part of the fandom.

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2012-10-10 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
But debaters gonna debate. I'm just glad Ganya's my forever Buffy OTP, way fewer fights.

I can't say I'm a Ganya shipper but I would have loved to have seen more done with them on the show. Xander and Anya were ok, but Giles and Anya were BRILLIANT in Tabula Rasa, and would have made such a dynamic couple.

Ok, so maybe I do ship them Any good fic you can recommend?

I also would have loved more Giles/Joyce but that probably would have been too vanilla in retrospect. (OTOH, I wanted Joyce to have her own life, including love life, and not just be "Buffy's mom". A girl can dream.)

[identity profile] josiefier.livejournal.com 2012-10-10 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I think what makes me ship them even harder than just everything in Tabula Rasa has been:
1.) Who would know more about demons than Giles?
2.) It would look like Giles was ~robbing the cradle~ whereas Anya was really about 1,000 years older than him.
3.) Grave. There was hand and hair touching! No spell or memory loss required.

As for recs - basically everything here: http://gilesanya-fic.livejournal.com/

But my absolute favorite is: Cross Road Blues - massive angst warning though

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2012-10-10 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yum! Thank you - I started Cross Road Blues and am loving it. Angst? It's right up my alley (why else would S6 be my favorite?)

[identity profile] josiefier.livejournal.com 2012-10-10 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! You're welcome. :D

And double yay for not being the only one who loves S6!

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2012-10-11 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh I thought i was the only one because my first exposure to fandom was on the ATV club episode reviews where a lot of the commentary threads actually ended up being about AtS, and the general consensus was "the early seasons were awesome, the later ones crap" (repeated ad nauseum.) So I was surprised when I came to LJ and discovered pockets of fandom with a completely different attitude.

Have you seen the Lj community "Late Season Love"?

[identity profile] josiefier.livejournal.com 2012-10-11 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, most people do seem to hate S6, but I'm definitely not one of them. I could never hate the season that gave us that much Spuffy and Giles/Anya.

No, I haven't.

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2012-10-11 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Again, it really depends where you "hang out" as I found out quickly - I was thrilled to find people who appreciated S6 on LJ and that's why I opened an account here - to be able to interact with like minds. (The "general fandom" went on about how AWFUL Doublemeat Palace is, for instance. Are they insane? I've never worked in fast food but retail has much the same feel, the same soullessness about it, so it felt so familiar.) And yes to spuffy, and Giles/Anya, and Tabula Rasa - so funny AND heartbreaking.

Oh, and I find a greater appreciation of S4 in these parts as well - I think that season deserves serious re-evaluation.

[identity profile] coalitiongirl.livejournal.com 2012-04-25 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
Kelly, it's so good that you asked this because I've been wondering for years! Finally, this will be resolved and fandom can rest at last!

[identity profile] xlivvielockex.livejournal.com 2012-04-25 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Mari, I think these are the kind of tough questions that fandom NEEDS to have answered after all these years, especially with new developments in the comics. For a really long time, I thought they were less filling but really now, I see that they taste great.

[identity profile] coalitiongirl.livejournal.com 2012-04-25 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
I can't tell you how glad I am that you feel that way.

[identity profile] xlivvielockex.livejournal.com 2012-04-25 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
It's all because of you and all the other wonderful Spuffies I have come to know over the years. YOU HAVE OPENED MY EYES!

Though Buffy/Clem will ALWAYS be my endgame het ship

[identity profile] coalitiongirl.livejournal.com 2012-04-25 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
It's okay you know how I feel about Buffy/Anya

[identity profile] ms-scarletibis.livejournal.com 2012-04-25 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, it tastes great, but we rarely if ever get to taste it in canon :P

[identity profile] xlivvielockex.livejournal.com 2012-04-25 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't that what advertising is all about? Give them a taste and want them leaving more.

Or was that drug dealers?

[identity profile] ms-scarletibis.livejournal.com 2012-04-26 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's more like a drug dealer, and yes, I think that's an appropriate reference :p They get you high and hooked to the point where you can't tell if it's even still good product or not...

WHAT ARE THESE THINGS OF WHICH YOU SPEAK AND WHERE CAN I OBTAIN THEM?!

[identity profile] sunny-serenity.livejournal.com 2012-04-29 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Let's just go with: It's complicated. Because that's how I feel about it now... and then... and pretty much ALWAYS when it comes to them. Ugh, I have to sort my ~feels... Harump.

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2012-10-10 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm really new to fandom (as in, this year - and eventually I'll stop announcing that all over the place), and had no idea there was such a thing as "shipper wars". (my only fandom prior was Moulin Rouge. No shipper wars there, obviously.) Nor did I have any idea that so much fan discussion would center around Buffy's love life (or attempts to have one), and who she really loved etc etc etc

Nevertheless - I adore Buffy/Spike for the twisted, dysfunctional mess they are and where they take it to, if Whedon was a coward at the end. So -tastes great.

There are people too young to remember that ad campaign? Am I really getting that old? Yeesh.
